About
DIY Wall Art is an independent hobby and how-to site about making your own wall decor. It is not a store, a studio or a design service. It publishes free step-by-step guides for people who would like to put something handmade on a wall and are not sure where to start.
What you will find here
- Easy first projects: how to choose a first piece, a basic supply kit described by type rather than brand, and simple ideas that need few tools.
- Paper and painted pieces: collage, layered and cut paper, and acrylic projects built from simple shapes, color fields and taped edges.
- Textured, fabric and geometric pieces: raised surfaces, yarn and fabric work, and designs based on measured shapes and repeats.
- Techniques: choosing colors, composing a piece, measuring, hanging lightweight art and arranging several pieces on one wall.
- Seasonal pieces that can be made, displayed and swapped out through the year.
If you are new, a good place to begin is DIY Wall Art for Beginners, followed by the guides to choosing a color palette and hanging lightweight wall art. The full list of guides is on the Tutorials page.
Original designs and illustrations
The projects on this site are original designs. They are built from basic shapes, materials and methods that anyone is free to use, and they are not reproductions or imitations of other artists’ work. You are welcome to make any of them for your own home and to change them as much as you like.
The pictures in the guides are original drawings made for this site. They are illustrations that show how a piece is put together and what the result should look like. They are not photographs of finished pieces, and they are not copies of anyone else’s artwork.
Editorial policy: how the guides are written and corrected
- One subject per guide. Each guide covers one project or one skill, with the materials listed first and the steps in the order you do them.
- Plain descriptions. Tools and materials are named by type, not by brand. Measurements are given in inches with metric equivalents, and the sizes are examples you can scale to your own wall.
- No invented evidence. The site does not publish made-up reviews, ratings, testimonials or reader numbers, and it does not claim credentials it does not have. Time estimates are approximate and depend on your pace and on drying times.
- Sources. Some guides lean on general background, such as how a color wheel works. Those guides link to a reference page so you can read further.
- Corrections. If a step is unclear, a measurement looks wrong or a link is broken, tell us through the Contact page. When a guide is corrected, the article is edited directly and its “updated” date changes.
Hanging advice is general
The pieces described here are lightweight, and the hanging advice is general. Walls differ, and so does hardware. Before you hang anything, follow the hardware manufacturer’s instructions for your wall type and for the weight of the piece. This site does not state how much any hook, strip, nail or anchor will hold, because that depends on the product and the wall.
A note on tools and safety
Some projects use craft knives, scissors, paint or glue, and hanging a piece can involve a ladder or a drill. Cut away from your hands on a cutting mat, keep sharp tools out of the reach of children, and set a ladder on a firm, level floor. Before drilling or nailing into a wall, check for wires and pipes. When you are unsure about a wall, a fixing or a tool, ask a professional.

The guides are free to read. The site may display advertising to help cover its running costs. Advertising, when it is shown, is kept separate from the guides, and advertisers have no say in what the guides recommend. The Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy explain how advertising relates to cookies.
